Yep, Whipple (S.B.D.) and Whizdoodle.  As you might have guessed, these beers are Roald Dahl influenced, and that’s because they are a spin on Bogue Beauregarde… named for Violet Beauregarde in Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.  It all comes full circle.

Bogues was first fermented on a mixture of a saison yeast and wild yeast culled from the outside of some blueberries.  Just the outside though; we didn’t use the blueberries for anything other than the yeast.  For a long time we had been wanting to do a blueberry beer, so a version of Bogues seemed a perfect candidate.  Ryan re-did the recipe to make it work better with fruit, and then it was named Whipple Scrumptious Blueberry Delight.  To up it a bit more, we also decided to sour some of the wort as well, and this we dubbed Whizdoodle.

Today was a perfect brew day.  We hit all of our numbers almost perfectly, and the wort we collected at the end was deep purple!  What makes the color all the more amazing is that we’ve only used 4 of the 20 pounds of blueberries that are going to go into these beers… we’ve only got 20% of the blueberries in there.

In go the blueberries… causing Ryan to burn his face with wort.  For the 2nd time.

Once the yeast (now a saison and brettanomyces blend) gets going, both beers will have more blueberries added, as well as additional Brettanomyces claussenii.  Once the secondary fermentation on the blueberries is complete, Whizdoodle will have a sour bacteria blend (and potentially some oak) added, then both beers will be left to age for at least a couple of months.

It’s. So. Purple.

These beers are the first of a long list that we are going to brew and store up in order to throw a potential investor dinner in the spring.  We have a pretty aggressive goal to brew between now and then!  Hopefully we will get a chance to share some of these (and the many more we are making) with you soon.
