Tasting event: Boardwalk on Bulverde

Hey everyone! On Saturday we had our 2nd public tasting event, this time at the awesome food truck park Boardwalk on Bulverde (14732 Bulverde Rd).  If you haven’t been there before, this weekend is their FOOD TRUCK THROWDOWN, so sounds like a good time to check it out!  The event was nice.  We had a shaded bar area, we got to use our banner for the first time, we served a BUNCH of beer, and we got a BUNCH of feedback!

We had a decent sized crowd that came in waves, so we’d have times with a lot of people at the table, and times with none.  This crowd also had a lot more interaction with us than the last crowd, which was made up more of people we knew.  This time there were a lot more people we didn’t know personally hanging out, and I feel that made for more honest and valid feedback.  Speaking of, the feedback was sort of what we expected.  The beers that we thought needed the most work got the lowest scores… but nothing scored “low”!  We were amazed once we tabulated the forms as to just HOW HIGH the people at BoB rated the beers!  Thanks guys and gals! *blush*

We also met some cool people that want to help us in the future with getting the word out, as well as some representatives from Four Corners Brewing Company, who brought us some of THEIR beer.  You guys rock!!!  We got to sell some glasses, and with the money we took in from that we ordered stickers (so you too can have your BBxB sticker soon!)  Other than the fact that it was SUPER DUPER HOT, this was a really fun event, and we want to thank everyone for coming out.  On top of that we had 50 new Facebook followers in less than 24 hours, so the word is getting out!

Awwww BoB, we love you too!

Speaking of getting the word out, we just applied to be a part of the Break Fast & Launch program, which is a “culinary business accelerator,” in other words they help us get going quicker.  If you could do us a solid and go here and tell them how cool you think we are, that might help us get in the program!  Anyone in the San Antonio area looking to get one of our glasses, email BBxBRyan@yahoo.com or BBxBManny@yahoo.com and we’ll make that happen.  In the meantime in-betweentime, we’ll leave you with the video Ryan made for B F & L.  Until next time…

Cheers!

Cheers!

Brew Day: #lovewins

Back on June 26, 2015, history changed.  With the ruling by the SCOTUS, legal marriage has been re-defined.  For both myself (Ryan) and Manny, this was a very welcomed decision as we both have people that we love that now have more options in their lives.  Love is love.  In celebration of the decision in general, and specifically for my friends Michelle and Cindy who went out DAY 1 in Texas and did what they have been wanting to do for a very long time, we decided to brew a celebratory beer.  Michelle and Cindy both like Amber Ale, and BBxB had not made one of these yet, so it seemed a perfect fit.  However, since we’re not going to do anything too plain, and because love is spicy, we added some rye and some spicy hops (Nugget and Cluster) to make our Rye Amber Ale, #lovewins.

It's super-hot in the garage in San Antonio in July, so we built a redneck AC unit out of a cooler, fan, tubing, and ice. And it worked!

The brew went really well, without any of the normal pitfalls.  No spills, no mess-ups, just a great brewday.  We hit our temp in the mash, added a mash-out step, did a 2 batch sparge, ended up with slightly more wort than expected, but then after boil off we were almost exactly where we wanted to be.  The hops both smelled great (this is our first beer utilizing Nugget), and Manny picked up a new probe thermometer, so we didn’t have to stand over the sweltering pot!

We’re really looking forward to letting you all try this one.  The Amber ale was my starting point with craft beer, and if this recipe turns out good it could eventually be a part of our Standard series.  The rye addition should not be overpowering, but should add a bit of complexity and depth that I often find lacking in Amber ales, and paired with these spicier hops I think we are going to end up with something really nice.  Unfortunately it won’t be ready for our 7/18 event at Boardwalk on Bulverde, but Agrio Inked (our sour stout) will be, so we’re excited about sharing that one with you all!  Until then, cheers!

Um... yeah. Saggy.

Brew Day: Monogamous – Citra (and FREE BEER events!!!)

I (Ryan) have a week off from work, and since I didn’t really get a chance to go anywhere, I’m dubbing it my Beercation.  Let me be clear, that is a vacation WITH beer, not a vacation FROM beer!  A good friend from high school (in Germany!), Chris, came to town as well.  Chris has recently started brewing himself, so we decided that one of the activities while he was here is that we would do his first all-grain brew day, and I decided that I’d try my updated malt bill for Monogamous.  This time it’s Monogamous: Citra.

Our nice digital thermometer broke, so we had to use the manual one (which means sitting over a hot pot in a hot garage...)

I built a yeast starter a few days earlier of Conan aka Vermont Ale yeast (aka the yeast that is in Heady Topper), and on Wednesday we got to it.  This was a pretty uneventful brew day… no major spillage, no major accidents, and the drinking was a bit more reserved on this one.  That is partially because of past experience, and partially because it was hot as hell in the garage.

Mmmmmmmm... Citra!

Mmmmmmmm… Citra!

...and Turbinado!

…and Turbinado!

We ended up getting a little lower volume than expected from the mash/sparge, and it ended up boiling a bit longer than expected, so the overall volume of beer was a bit diminished.  The OG ended up a tiny bit lower than was anticipated as well, but not significantly so.  I have high hopes that M:C is going to be a much better IPA than Monogamous: Simcoe was.  Once I get the malt bill dialed in to exactly what I want, I will eventually re-visit Simcoe hops and see the difference.
